O início! - The beginning!

As acromyrmex são formigas que se assemelham perfeitamente às saúvas, no entanto se diferenciam no tamanho, por serem menores. Diferente também das saúvas que constroem seus formigueiros com diversas câmaras subterrânea, a acromyrmex embora construam seu ninho também na modalidade subterrânea, constroem menos câmaras que as attas.

Faz alguns dias capturei algumas rainhas Acromyrmex. Três morreram e as duas sobreviventes iniciaram a sua cultura de fungo, para a futura alimentação de toda a colônia. Aqui vemos a rainha cuidando da bola de fungo dentro de uma caixa de tic tac.

Uma das coisas que mais me fascina nesta espécie, é o fato de que ela produz, cultiva o seu alimento, ao invés de coletar.

The Acromyrmex ants are ants taht perfectly resemble the atta, however they differ in size, being smaller. Also different from the ants that build their nests with several underground chambers, although the Acromyrmex also build their nest in underground mode, it builds only less chambers than attas.

A few days I captured some Acromyrmex queens. Three died and the two survivors began their fungus cultivation for the future supply of the entire colony. Here we see the queen tending the fungus ball inside a tic tac box.

One of the things that fascinates me most in this species, is the fact that it produces, cultivates its food, instead of collecting.

A segunda rainha manteve a cultura inicial do fungo na parede do frasco, e ao invés de fazer uma bola, arrumou a cultura como de fosse uma estrutura. No meio do fungo percebe-se ovos.

The second queen kept the initial cultivation of the fungus on the wall of the little bottle, and instead of making a ball, got the culture as it were a structure. In the middle of the fungus one can perceive eggs.
