O berçário - The Nursery

Aqui dá pra ver os ovos, as larvas e um estágio relativo ao de pupa (as formiguinhas brancas com os olhos pretos), em desenvolvimento. Clique na imagem para aumentá-la.

Here you can see the eggs, larvae and a pupae (the white ants with black eyes), under development. Click on the image to enlarge it.

Comida - Food

Coloquei cenoura e xuxu cozida para as acros e elas cheiraram, morderam, mas não coletaram.

I'd put carrots and cooked vegetables for the  acromyrmex and they smelled, bitten, but did not collected.

Daí coloquei um hibíscus inteiro na caixa... Elas amaram.
Then I'd put a whole hibiscus flower inside the box... They loved it.

Começaram a coleta pela base e depois passaram a coletar os flocos de pólen.
They began collecting at the base and then began to collect the pollen flakes.

Nova comida - New food

Vejam na foto abaixo que as formigas deram destino às folhas de 'quebra pedra', ou seja, foram anexadas ao fungo.

Look at the picture below, the ants  made good use of the leaves, they were attached to the fungus.

Assim peguei uma quantidade de flores de palmeira imperial. Coloquei no formigueiro, mas foi um problema. As flores são meio borrachudas e as formigas não conseguiam cortá-las para carregá-las para dentro do formigueiro, assim tive que fazer um trabalho de Psyche... Cortei uma a uma as flores, e coloquei de volta à caixa de forragem.

So I took a quantity of flowers of imperial palm. I put in the nest, but it was a problem. The flowers are kinda rubbery and the ants could not cut them to carry them into the nest, so I had to do the mithologic job of Psyche ... I cut the flowers one by one, and put back in the food box.

Assim a coleta rolou sem problemas.
So the collect was smoothly.

Festinha na caixa - Little party in the box

Esta foto é anterior a todas estas novas postagens. Onde as formigas viram as fibras externas do gomo da tangerina pela primeira vez. Adoraram, mas custou muito esforço pra coletar e assim elas desistiram.
Notem o tubo d'agua completamente entupido por pedaços de folhas. Além delas terem tentado cobri-lo com folhas velhas. Elas não coletam mais água. Pelo menos não tenho visto e os indícios sugerem.


This photo is before all these new posts. Where ants saw the external fibers tangerine first. Loved it, but it cost a lot of effort to collect and so they gave up. Notice the water little pipe completely clogged by pieces of leaves. Besides them had tried to cover it with old leaves. They do not collect more water. At least I have not seen, and the evidence suggests.

Fotos do interior da colônia. Percebam a quantidade de folhas de quebra pedra que foram coletadas. Tinha bastante pétalas das flores amarela e lilás, mas estas foram agregadas ao fundo rapidamente.

E uma foto frontal da cultura de fungo. A foto não ficou muito nítida, mas dá pra ter uma idéia.

Jardim das delícias II - Garden of Delights II

As formigas coletaram bastante da flor amarela e das pétalas lilás, e coletaram completamente o pistilo do hibiscus. Depois num dado momento elas obstruiram o acesso à caixa de forragem. Vá entender! Talvez estivesse tentando evitar que uma quantidade de umidade chegasse ao interior da colônia, pois depois de um tempo o acetato da caixa de forragem estava embaçado indicando umidade.

Ants collected enough of the yellow flower, lilac petals, and collected quite the hibiscus pistil . After a given time they blocked access to forage box. Can't understand! Maybe they were trying to avoid a lot of moisture to get inside the colony, because after a while the acetate  forage box was blurry indicating moisture .

O Lixão - The trash

Aqui é a área da caixa de forragem onde elas depositam o lixo. As vezes elas acumulam o lixo durante o dia dentro da colônia, numa das laterais longe do fungo; e a noite elas levam todo o lixo acumulado para esta área na caixa de forragem. Interessante, não?

O lixo é composto basicamente de fungo morto e pedaços vegetais que foram descartados.


Here is the  forage box area where they dump the trash. Sometimes they accumulate trash during the day within the colony, one of the far side of the fungus, and during the night they take all the garbage accumulated in this area in the food box. Interesting, no?

The waste consists mainly of dead fungus and vegetable pieces that were discarded.

O jardim das delícias com uma variedade nas possibilidades de coleta:

Uma operária escolhe a micro orquídea e sai carregando a flor inteira.
A worker chooses micro orchid and carry out the entire flower.

Apesar de terem se interessado pela fibra da tangerina, elas não conseguiram coletar muito. Não conseguiam cortar pedaços significativos da fibra.

Although they have been interested in fiber tangerine, they could not collect much. They couldn't cut significant chunks of fiber.
