Surpresa! - Surprise!

Ontem quando fui mexer na caixa de forragem, para verificar o quanto as formigas já tinham coletado, surpreendi uma princesa andando sobre a cultura de fungo. Não deu tempo pegar a máquina pra fazer a foto, pois ela imediatamente entrou num dos buracos que dão acesso ao interior da estrutura feita de fungo. Uhuuuuuuu! Já tenho princesas... mas não dá pra saber quantas ainda! Espero poder registrá-las em foto logo.

Yesterday when I was checking  the forage box , to see how the ants had collected, I surprised a princess walking on the culture of the fungus. There was no time to take the machine to do the photo because it immediately went into the holes that give access to the interior of the structure made ​​of fungus. Uhuuuuuuu! Adubando - Composting

Esta foto tem umas duas semanas. As formigas coletaram bastante do botão de rosa vermelho. E muito das folhas que coloquei na caixa.

Produção de Água - Water production

Eu fiquei muito tempo intrigado com a coleta de água das acros. Elas simplesmente ignoravam o tubo de água na caixa de foragem, bem como isolavam-no com folhas mortas. Depois de um tempo percebi uma quantidade de água acumulando-se na base do frasco da colônia, e pensei que seria o resultado da condensação da umidade por conta da cultura de fungo. Depois de alguns dias ficou claro que não pderia ser a condensação, por causa da quantidade de água acumulada e a sua coloração. Hoje elas têem uma fonte própria de água dentro do frasco da colônia. Achei muito interessante! Percebam a quantidade de água cor de chá a direita do interior do frasco.

I was long puzzled by the collecting water of the acromyrmex. They simply ignored the water pipe in the food box and isolates it with dead leaves. After a while I realized an amount of water accumulating in the bottom of the colony jar, and thought that would be the result of condensation of moisture due to the fungus cultivation. After a few days it was clear that couldn't be the condensation because the amount of accumulated water and its color. Today they teem itself a source of water in the bottle of the colony. I found it very interesting! Notice the amount of water with tea color to the right of the jar.

Aqui dá pra ver os ovos, as larvas e um estágio relativo ao de pupa (as formiguinhas brancas com os olhos pretos), em desenvolvimento. Clique na imagem para aumentá-la.

Comida - Food

Coloquei cenoura e xuxu cozida para as acros e elas cheiraram, morderam, mas não coletaram.

I'd put carrots and cooked vegetables for the  acromyrmex and they smelled, bitten, but did not collected.

Daí coloquei um hibíscus inteiro na caixa... Elas amaram.
Then I'd put a whole hibiscus flower inside the box... They loved it.

Começaram a coleta pela base e depois passaram a coletar os flocos de pólen.
They began collecting at the base and then began to collect the pollen flakes.

Nova comida - New food

Vejam na foto abaixo que as formigas deram destino às folhas de 'quebra pedra', ou seja, foram anexadas ao fungo.

Assim peguei uma quantidade de flores de palmeira imperial. Coloquei no formigueiro, mas foi um problema. As flores são meio borrachudas e as formigas não conseguiam cortá-las para carregá-las para dentro do formigueiro, assim tive que fazer um trabalho de Psyche... Cortei uma a uma as flores, e coloquei de volta à caixa de forragem.

So I took a quantity of flowers of imperial palm. I put in the nest, but it was a problem. The flowers are kinda rubbery and the ants could not cut them to carry them into the nest, so I had to do the mithologic job of Psyche ... I cut the flowers one by one, and put back in the food box.

Assim a coleta rolou sem problemas.
